Statement from Wyoming Family Alliance President & CEO Nathan Winters Supporting Rep. Hageman’s Life-Saving Legislation
January 30, 2026
CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Wyoming Family Alliance supports this vital legislation from Representative Hageman as it affirms one of the “unalienable” rights our nation was founded to protect: the right to life.
Tax-exempt status is not an entitlement; it is a public privilege. It exists to encourage work that genuinely benefits the common good. But when that privilege is granted to organizations that participate in abortion, or facilitate it financially and operationally, it distorts the purpose of charity and misuses the government’s role in conferring public benefit. Intentionally ending innocent human life is not “charitable,” and the federal government should not reward or legitimize it.
This is not hypothetical. Some organizations, operating under the banner of “charity,” can provide direct financial assistance for abortions, promote in-person, telehealth, and mail-order abortion drugs, regardless of legality across jurisdictions, subsidize travel for out-of-state abortions, and publish guidance aimed at helping minors bypass parental notification, cutting parents out of consequential decisions.
Whatever one’s political position, labeling these activities as “charitable” is a serious misrepresentation of what the American people typically understand charity to mean.
Studies show that Americans rightly reject taxpayer funding of abortion. However, when groups that support or provide funding for abortion receive tax exemptions, it effectively acts as a kind of indirect public subsidy, one granted without the taxpayer even knowing that it is happening.
This bill closes a troubling loophole and restores moral clarity: public privileges should not be used to underwrite the abortion industry. And introducing this effort in the wake of the March for Life underscores a simple message: our laws should not confer favored status on institutions that profit from or promote violence against the most vulnerable.
