Honoring Wyoming's Fallen Heroes of

World War I

The First World War, often described as the Great War, spanned from 1914 to 1918 and was a conflict of unprecedented scale and devastation. This global war, involving many of the world’s great powers, witnessed the mobilization of over 70 million military personnel and resulted in millions of casualties, marking it as one of the deadliest conflicts in history. The war was characterized by the trench warfare on the Western Front, where soldiers endured horrific conditions, facing not just the enemy, but also battling the perils of disease, hunger, and the harsh elements. The bravery and sacrifices of these soldiers, who fought in some of the most brutal conditions ever known in warfare, cannot be overstated. Their endurance in the face of relentless artillery barrages, poison gas attacks, and the horror of no man’s land is a testament to their courage and resilience. The war brought about significant political, cultural, economic, and social changes, and the soldiers who laid down their lives did so in the hope of a better, more peaceful world.

Wyoming, though a relatively small state in terms of population, made significant contributions to the First World War effort. Its citizens, imbued with a strong sense of patriotism and duty, eagerly enlisted to serve. The state’s National Guard units were among those called up to serve in the conflict, embodying Wyoming’s spirit of determination and resilience. These soldiers from Wyoming found themselves in unfamiliar lands, facing the grim realities of war, yet they stood firm, displaying remarkable bravery and steadfastness. Wyoming’s contribution to the war effort extended beyond the battlefield. At home, communities rallied to support the war through various means, including war bond drives and providing care packages to soldiers overseas. This collective effort, from the front lines to the home front, highlights Wyoming’s integral role in the First World War, both in terms of military participation and in boosting national morale.

We have records of 155 Wyoming Soldiers who perished in the War. This number may be incomplete, and we are eager to update our database as we discover new information.
