What Should Voters Look for in a Candidate? Wyo Voter Guide from Wyoming Family Alliance Action

Nathan Winters offers three questions to help Wyoming voters evaluate candidates with clarity, conviction, and wisdom.

Every election season we hear, “This is the most important election ever.” In many ways, that is true.

Every election matters more than the previous because it determines the ideas that will advance in the culture. As Richard Weaver famously wrote decades ago, ideas have consequences.

The decisions made by elected officials affect families, churches, schools, businesses, and ultimately the future our children inherit.

Yet often, as we consider those we will elect to represent us, we focus on policies, platforms, and political affiliations. Those things matter.

Yet history teaches us that good government requires something even deeper. It requires leaders of character and wisdom.

“Good government requires something deeper. It requires leaders of character and wisdom.”

During this election season, I would encourage you to consider three questions as you determine who will represent you in elected office.

Question One

Do they have the knowledge to know what is good and true?

Question Two

Do they have the courage to fight for what they know is good and true?

Question Three

Do they have the ability to stand skillfully?

First, do they have the knowledge to know what is good and true?

Leadership begins with understanding reality as it is. A leader who cannot distinguish truth from falsehood, right from wrong, or wisdom from folly will inevitably lead others astray.

Our nation and state need men and women who recognize that truth is not merely a matter of opinion but something that can be known and defended.

Second, do they have the courage to fight for what they know is good and true?

Knowledge alone is not enough. Throughout history, many people have known the right course of action but lacked the courage to stand firm when the cost became high.

Public service often demands difficult decisions and the willingness to withstand criticism, pressure, and opposition. Character is revealed when conviction is tested.

Third, do they have the ability to stand skillfully?

In the Hebrew Old Testament, the word for wisdom, chokmah, carries at its heart the idea of practical skillfulness.

Wisdom is the ability to apply truth effectively in the real world. Good leaders must not only know what is right and possess the courage to pursue it; they must also have the judgment, prudence, and practical skill necessary to achieve worthy goals.

Strong families, vibrant communities, and a flourishing Wyoming depend upon leaders who possess knowledge, courage, and wisdom.

At Wyoming Family Alliance, we believe strong families, vibrant communities, and a flourishing Wyoming depend upon leaders who possess all three qualities: knowledge, courage, and wisdom.
